The AtchisonKansas.com website was created by a local Atchison business, Webcom Resources, and is supported by a team of Atchison residents who are passionate about providing a comprehensive online resource for their community. The site grew out of a need to locate information about local Atchison businesses and organizations in a managed, authentic presentation. The team then realized there were additional features that could benefit the community as well as showcase Atchison to visitors and new residents.
Hence, the Atchison community website was born.
In keeping with the initial inspiration, the main feature of the website is a categorized listing of every business and organization in Atchison. The listings are free for local businesses, and include contact information, profile photos, and website links.
All listings were manually entered by the team. “Although there are many directory and city portal websites out there, most of them are computer-generated and unattended,” says Collins. “We did our best to provide a highly usable website from the very start. We didn’t want businesses to have to take time to set up their profile–they are ready to go.”
The event calendar is community-driven, allowing anyone to add an event. This provides a resource for people to discover what is going on in Atchison on any given day. Not just the big events like the Amelia Earhart Festival, but also the community events that make you love living in a smaller city.
It is often difficult to discover others in your community that share the same interests. The Connect section of the Atchison community website is a free resource, specific to Atchison, to help community members connect and enjoy getting to know one another over similar interests.
The team felt that a free classified ads section would be a benefit to the community by providing an Atchison-only platform to buy, sell and trade with local residents. The classifieds section of the website allows for photos and videos and sharing on social media. The garage sale listing is a particularly popular page, with mobile-friendly location maps of each sale.
In 2016 , a blog was added to the site, focused around providing an insider view on the positive activity in Atchison. Local editors can write posts, yet another way for community members to get involved.
